In my illustration critique group, we started our own monthly challenge to encourage "growth" in our work, style and concepts.

Hence, the theme for our first challenge, "Growth".

Needle Felting

Here is a portion of an illustration I just finished for a client.

Months ago I ordered a needle felt kit to make a duck . Unfortunately, I still haven't made time to make him but the tools from the kit came in really handy! I am so happy with this little chap and he was so fun to make!

A Place to Bark!

Check out this great blog created by a multi media artist who also is working very hard to build her own rescue shelter. It looks like she will be holding an art auction (is looking for artists to participate I think)to help earn some money for her rescue efforts. Very cool. Go take a look and please help spread the word!

Sketch approval

This is the part I don't enjoy as an illustrator. Waiting for the sketch approval.
Nail biting.

I know that revisions are a part of the process and I'm totally okay with that.  I guess the truth of it is, though, I want to get it 'right' the first time and hear "Perfect! Go to finish!" 

That does happen but I've also had AD's ask for more details, to remove things because they aren't appropriate and even times when they have literally drawn over my sketch to get their vision across.  It gets easier the more assignments I do, but still that knot remains whenever I hit "send".

I wonder if that ever goes away?

Anyway, back to the nail biting...

Illustration Friday- Spotted

High Five!

Received a very exciting assignment this week. Highlights Magazine is launching a new magazine for toddlers called, "High Five" and they have asked me to illustrate a cover!! I'm still "gobsmacked" over the opportunity!

I'm really going to explore with this piece. I want to incorporate a lot of embellishments and tactile elements. Time to have fun and play.

Also received an interesting assignment from Girl Guiding, the UK girl scouts. I'll be illustrating a spread for their Brownie annual.

Anyway, that's the scoop....If anyone tells you that you can't be paid doing something you love...well they're wrong. Dreams really do come true.

illo friday- speed

I'm coming in kind of late with my illo friday contribution.(not even going to bother posting it to illo friday site) But I thought this little guy would be appropriate.
"Slow and steady wins the race", as they say.

"Speed" is something I'm always battling. I try to rush and do too much and in the end make myself physically ill and burned out.

I want to slow down and enjoy the process, y'know? Savor the journey regarding all aspects of my life. Really, that's what it's all about isn't it? Enjoying the here and now because who knows what tomorrow will bring.

On the homefront we have been dealing with the shock that a dearly loved family member has been diagnosed with an aggressive , incurable cancer. We're all having a difficult time grasping and accepting the situation. It has only been three years since my husbands mom lost her battle with cancer and now it's his dads turn. 

Here is a picture of my lovely father in law, "pops" with his new bride ,Ms. Sue. She has been such a blessing for all of us. We would appreciate prayers if you feel a prompting to do so.
